Shingle Types for Tallahassee Roofs
Asphalt shingles come in a few clear grades. Price per square rises with thickness and layers, and so does the life you can expect under North Florida sun.

3-Tab Shingles
A 3-tab shingle is one flat layer cut into three even tabs, which gives the roof a uniform, brick-like pattern. HomeGuide prices it at $200 to $500 per square installed. Its numbers also show the catch: 3-tab carries a 25- to 30-year warranty but a 15- to 20-year expected life, and HomeGuide notes that shingle roofs usually wear out before their warranty does, except in mild climates.

Architectural (Laminated) Shingles
Architectural, or dimensional, shingles bond two or more layers together, so the roof reads as textured and shadowed rather than flat. HomeGuide puts them at $400 to $600 per square installed, with 30- to 50-year warranties and a 20- to 30-year life. The code requires at least four fasteners per strip shingle, or more if the manufacturer calls for them (R905.2.6), and the manufacturer's instructions set where each nail goes.
Designer and Luxury Shingles
Designer lines are styled to look like slate or wood shake. HomeGuide lists them at $500 to $700 per square, with warranties of 40 to 50 years or "lifetime" and a 25- to 40-year life. Lifetime and 50-year shingles cost 10% to 20% more than 30-year ones, and HomeGuide notes they usually come with an algae-resistant coating.

Impact-Rated Class 4 Shingles (UL 2218)
UL 2218 rates impact resistance by dropping steel balls of increasing size onto the shingle, twice in the same spot. If the back of the shingle shows no cracking, it earns a class. Class 4 is the top rating, passed with a 2-inch ball; Class 1 uses a 1.25-inch ball. One manufacturer's sell sheet adds that a lab rating doesn't guarantee performance, and that its warranty excludes hail damage. The FORTIFIED program run by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) uses its own hail ratings for its optional hail supplement and says they outperform typical Class 4 shingles. We found no NOAA hail frequency figure for Tallahassee, so the deciding factors are the price difference and what your insurer says in writing.
Algae-Resistant Shingles
Algae-resistant lines mix copper granules into the surface. HomeGuide says they cost about 5% to 15% more, and recommends them where humidity and rain are high. Roof cleaning explains the black algae streaks they're meant to prevent.

Shingle Wind Ratings for Leon County
Every shingle sold for a Florida roof has to be tested for wind and labeled with its class on the wrapper. The class the code demands depends on the design wind speed at the address.
Leon County's wind speed
The Florida Building Commission's 8th-edition map puts Leon County between the 115 mph and 120 mph ultimate design wind speed lines for ordinary homes (Risk Category II), and the county accepted the preliminary map unchanged. The code table
Florida Residential Code Table R905.2.6.1 has a row for wind speeds up to 116 mph, which accepts ASTM D7158 Class D, G or H, or ASTM D3161 Class D or F. The next row, up to 129 mph, drops D7158 Class D and accepts only Class G or H, or D3161 Class D or F. Leon County's 115 to 120 mph range straddles the 116 mph line, so ask for the wind speed at your address. What the two tests measure
ASTM D3161 blows a fan-driven air stream across shingles on a test panel at a 2:12 slope and, as its own scope says, doesn't measure uplift resistance. ASTM D7158 calculates the uplift force wind puts on a sealed shingle and checks it against the shingle's measured resistance. The highest classes
FORTIFIED requires D3161 Class F or D7158 Class H shingles, the top rating in each test.
HomeGuide's marketing figures of about 60 mph for 3-tab and 130 mph for architectural shingles are easy to quote, but inspectors go by the class printed on the bundle. Tallahassee is also outside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, which the code limits to Broward and Miami-Dade counties, so the code's HVHZ sections don't apply here.
Florida Product Approval and Cool Roof Finishes
Florida runs its own approval system for building products. Under Fla. Stat. 553.842, a product approved for statewide use can't be made to go through extra testing by a city or county, as long as it's installed within the conditions of its approval. The approval holds until the code it rests on changes, the product changes, or the approval is revoked. That's why the City's roofing permit form and Leon County's reroof affidavit both ask for the shingle's approval number. Ask for the number on the quote and check it on the Florida Building Commission's Product Approval search ("Find a Product or Application") at floridabuilding.org. What a full shingle reroof costs, and the permit and inspection steps, are on the roof replacement page.
Color is the other choice that affects the house. By the Florida Solar Energy Center's estimate, heat coming through the roof and attic makes up roughly a fifth of what the air conditioner has to remove. FSEC notes that early research points to light colors and smooth finishes for reflecting heat, but that not all light-colored roofs perform the same. ENERGY STAR stopped certifying roof products on June 1, 2022, so treat an older "ENERGY STAR shingle" claim with caution and ask for the product's published solar reflectance instead.
